AMGA's Measure Up/Pressure Down® National Hypertension Campaign Hosts Virtual Campaign Anniversary Event 12/04/2014
On Thursday, December 4, 2014, Measure Up/Pressure Down® convened medical groups, health systems, partners, sponsors, and other supporters to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the campaign. During this hour, participating groups were presented with awards recognizing their hypertension achievements—including best control, most improvement, quickest improvement, and groups at or near the campaign goal of 80% control by 2016. Million Hearts®’ Executive Director, Janet Wright, MD, unveiled the winners for the "Best Control" award. The event also provided actionable strategies and tactics to help organizations improve control rates by the end of the campaign. Million Hearts® is Featured in This Month's CDC Public Health Grand Rounds 09/08/2014
Since launching in 2012, Million Hearts® has captured the support of many individuals and organizations, and has made important steps in preventing heart attacks and strokes. We have learned much from leaders in health care and communities nationwide about what is working and how to affect change.
The September CDC Grand Rounds features some of the progress that has been made to date through the Million Hearts® initiative along with some of the work that is still needed to reach the goal of preventing one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. We will hear how public health and clinical care experts are coming together in communities to improve blood pressure control, how comprehensive tobacco policy efforts can be scaled to have a statewide impact, and how efforts to promote healthy nutrition can occur through exercising purchasing power to increase the availability of lower sodium products.

Million Hearts® for Millions of Meals: Reducing Sodium in Home Delivered and Congregate Meals Webinar 05/02/2014
The webinar features the importance of sodium reduction in meals served to older adults, meeting national recommendations for sodium intake in home delivered and congregate meal settings, and a case study highlighting successful implementation of sodium reduction strategies in the Meals on Wheels program. A discussion around working with food distributors on sodium reduction is also included.
Million Hearts® Conference Call to Discuss Evidence-Based Performance Measures for Cholesterol Management 04/22/2014
On April 22 and April 24, 2014, CDC will hold conference calls to discuss draft cholesterol measure specifications developed by the HHS Interagency Cholesterol Measures Workgroup consisting of representatives from CDC, CMS, ONC, NHLBI, HRSA, AHRQ, and IHS. These draft cholesterol measure specifications are based on the "2013 ACC/AHA Guideline on the Treatment of Blood Cholesterol to Reduce Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk in Adults."

The Veterans Health Administration and Million Hearts® Launch a Virtual Conference Series 02/06/2014
On February 20, 2014, 3:00–4:30 PM ET, The Veterans Health Administration (VA) and Million Hearts® will launch a Virtual Conference Series. The first presentation in this series is titled, "Integrating Tobacco Cessation Into Mental Health Care for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder". This program is intended for all VA, Department of Defense (DoD), HHS and Million Hearts® partners involved in the care of mental health (PTSD), tobacco cessation, and cardiac health, however, all interested clinicians are invited to participate. On September 13, 2012, the Million Hearts® initiative, in collaboration with the Offices of Minority Health at CMS and HHS, hosted a webinar entitled Promising Practices: Million Hearts® and Minority Health. The webinar discussed the importance of cardiovascular health and community approaches to addressing health disparities. Current partners shared their success stories, effective strategies, and lessons learned. Representatives from the Indian Health Services and Association of Black Cardiologists presented their efforts to support Native American/Alaskan Native, African American and Hispanic/Latino populations in achieving high blood pressure control.
Million Hearts® Risk Check Challenge 07/27/2012
Million Hearts® and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) are sponsoring a developer challenge and outreach initiative to inform millions of Americans who may be unaware they are at significant risk for CVD, encourage those who think they may be at risk to take action, and direct both to community pharmacies to receive blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Submissions are due by October 31, 2012.

To help providers deliver the best possible care to patients with cardiovascular diseases, Allscripts is sponsoring the Allscripts Million Hearts® Clinical Decision Support (CDS) Challenge. The challenge, which was announced in January, offers a $50,000 prize to the person or group that creates a publicly available application that accelerates the delivery of optimal care for patients with cardiovascular disease through clinical decision support functionality. CDC presents at TEDMED 2012: What Do You Do When Your Best Shot Falls Short? 04/11/2012
Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently gave a speech entitled, “What do you do when your best shot falls short?” at this year’s TEDMED conference in Washington, D.C. During the speech he discussed his many experiences in public health, including his time at CDC, both as Director and initially as an officer with the Epidemic Intelligence Service. A highlight of his talk, however, was his discussion of the importance of the Million Hearts initiative. He sees Million Hearts® as a program with a clear, definable objective which can be reached through aligning measures, simple modifications in care, and collaboration between public and private sector partners. U.S. EPA is happy to be participating in this important public health event by raising awareness about their green hearts campaign through a webinar scheduled for April 5th. On February 1, 2012, Million Hearts® launched a challenge to bloggers to help prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. The blogger who recruits the most pledges within the month of February will receive kudos and a distinguished prize from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a co-leader of the Million Hearts® initiative.
